The Insider Essay The movie, The Insider, is about Jeffrey Wigand, a former tobacco executive of one of the largest tobacco companies in America. He is fired from his job, and is soon contacted by Lowell Bergman, the producer of 60 minutes. Bergman, played by Al Pacino, asks Wigand, played by Russell Crowe, to make sense of some papers about fire statistics, which belong to, tobacco company, Wilson Phillips These papers mysteriously show up on his doorstep. Wigand lets it drop that he has some inside information about Big Tobacco, a group of the seven biggest tobacco companies. The information pertains to a chemical put into cigarettes that the CEOs of the seven dwarfs are aware are addictive. Big Tobacco has never lost a personal injuries case because their defense until then has been that they arent sure if cigarettes are addictive. Bergman convinces Wigand to tell his compelling story, and allow it to be circulated throughout the media, by telling Wigand that it is for the good of the country. Berg man and Wigand grow a bond throughout the movie, but are showered by disappointment when all the different types of media refuse to air the story because of the consequences that come along with it. Finally, they get the story into the newspapers. Based on a true story, The Insiders Bergman and Wigand put their lives, careers, reputations, and family at risk by standing up against Big Tobacco. In this movie, it was apparent that the bottom-line was important when deciding on whether or not to air the story. But you cant rule out the headline. After all, the headline effected the bottom-line immensely. It was because the headline was so dangerous, and controversial that the directors of the network decided they wouldnt allow the story to be aired. They would have been sued, and would have lost their reputation as a respectable show, because one of Big Tobaccos defense has been to out spend their opposition. The money that would have been spent on court cases effects the networks bott om-line. In The Insider the ultimate power of decision appeared to lie, not in the hands of the producer, but in the hands of the network the show aired on. When the department that deals with legal actions told the business department of the effects the story will have, and how the story wasnt worth the consequences, the network demanded that Bergman not air the story. Censorship plays a large part in the story. In the movie, Wigand is put through a rehearsal before the actual show. The most important parts of his confession are censored. He wasnt told about the changes until after the show is aired. Legally, the network didnt have to tell him, but by giving out a small portion of his story, he was subjected to ridicule because the show didnt give any of his evidence. He seemed unsupported with his accusations. Overall, I felt the film was a fair and balanced representation of how things work, at least in this situation. On the DVD version of The Insider the real Jeffrey Wigand and Lowell Bergman are interviewed. In their interview they say that the film is an amazing representation of what they lived through, and that not only was it accurate, but incredibly made, as well. I dont believe this way of doing business will ever change. Why would it? The big companies will always have the power, if not legally, than forcefully. Throughout the movie, Wigand and his family are subjected to the fear of finding bullets in their mailboxes, and threatening notes on their computers, and the worst of all, people, with guns, walking on their property at night. The smaller people in the world have to fight a hard and nasty fight to compete. Also, companies have so much more money than individuals. One person alone could not take on a major tobacco company, and six others who are supporting your opposition. Why Im Attending College ?Why I'm Attending College? I'm attending Stockton for a few reasons but I'm ultimately going to college for my future. I want to be successful and rich so I can have all the good things in life. I figure since my rock star career went south, I'll have to hit the books. I'm here at Stockton to attain a degree in business and learn the things I need to become a strong businessman. I enjoy business and want to continue with it for my career. I'd love to be the CEO of some huge corporation some day. I also want the full college experience partying, girls, partying... College gives me something to keep me going. Without it I feel like my job at the car wash is taking me nowhere. I want to be able to have a family without financial stress and worries. I used to think I was going to be a professional basketball player but I'm to short so that didn't really work out the way I planned it. Then I thought I'd be a professional golfer be I'm bored of the sport so I don't want to play anymore. S o finally I decided I'd have to study my way out of a middle class family. I began my college education at a school out in Idaho that I didn't want to be at in the first place. My parents thought that it would be good for me because it was a church school and it would keep me out of trouble. Well I thought differently. I didn't want to be at that school from the beginning, but finally I gave in and agreed to go. I think the only reason I agreed to go was out of respect for my parents and because a friend from home was going to room with me. So I guess originally I was going to college for my parents and my friends. Those are the wrong reasons to be going across country to a school. I didn't want to be going that far in the first place. Our trip took a total of four days on the road. I believe that was the best part. When I got to school I was miserable. I had absolutely no interest in meeting people or having a good time I just wanted to go home and be out of that foreign environmen t. I t seemed like the worst month of my life. It's obvious to see that I didn't make it through that first semester out at Ricks college. It was so bad for me that I had enough and withdrew from school. When I got home, needless to say, my parents were quite upset with me. What I was most worried about was raising the money to pay for tuition myself. That was the rule if I didn't go to a church school I had to pay my own tuition. So I got a job immediately when I got home so I could get the money together in time. It wasn't easy but I'm here attending Stockton. I can say I've worked hard to get here and I don't plan on wasting it. It's going to be easy for me to work hard in school because I'm the one who's paying for it. I'm always doing something now whether it be school or work or going out, because it can't be all work with no play now can it. Besides, I like to go out as much as possible. When I get older I want to have a family without the stress of financial barricades. My e ntire life my parents have been working two or three jobs each just to make ends meet. That's not where I want to be with my future. I want a sense of comfort that no matter what happens I'll have the money to take care of it. I don't exactly need a luxurious lifestyle, but I'd like to partake in a life of nicer cars, extravagant home, and cash in the bank. So after all I guess I would like to have a few dollars. Tokugowa essays The Tokugowa policy toward foreigners had changed greatly over the years and this had a great effect on the Japanese. The policy isolated Japan from the rest of the world for about 200 years. Then finally they had to cancel the rule so that contact was once again restablished. The Japanese had been very friendly and welcoming at first to the western traders. The Portuguese, English, Spanish and Dutch had come to Japan. The shoguns adapted the European style of weapons and castles helping them get more power. They were also welcoming to the Christian missionaries. Many Japanese even converted to the new religion. This all changed though after they learned about how the Spanish took over the Philippines. They started to worry that the foreigners were helping to seize their land and they also didnt like the trickery between the missionaries. The Tokugawa shoguns believed that the many Japanese Christians were going to start owing their loyalty to the pope. So they decided to ban the Christian missionaries and persecute the Japanese Christians. Many were tortured and killed and others were forced to practice in secret. Then in 1638 the Tokugawa shoguns banned the western merchants and didnt allow any Japanese to travel to foreign countries either. The trade was almost completely stopped in Japan and no more large ships were allowed to be built. Only once a year was a Dutch ship allowed to sail and trade at Nagasaki harbor. This way the Japanese could keep up with the worldly news and learn several new ideas like the Dutch medical texts. This policy was kept for about 200 years. There was a lot of trade between the cities which caused them to bloom and become very important. A city called Edo had grown so big it had a population that was over a million people.
